The Art Of Grooming With Mr. Tom Ford

Cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing… the key to a clean, clear and confident complexion starts with a strong daily skincare ritual. Add in some essential facial-hair maintenance – or management for those of the more hirsute persuasion, finish with a signature scent, and you’re groomed for success.

Skincare is all about finding a rhythm, regime, and routine that works for you. It can be as low or high maintenance as you prefer – the key is assessing your complexion concerns and put in a targeted response. But with so many products and steps, the trick is getting the fundamentals in place first. Known for his impeccable appearance and devilishly dapper style who better to share a few pointers on the matter than fashion designer and creative director of his eponymous brand, Mr. Tom ford…

“Fine grooming is the mark of a modern gentleman. It is the way a man presents the best version of himself to the world.” – TOM FORD

Mr. Ford explains: “Fine grooming is the mark of a modern gentleman. It is the way a man presents the best version of himself to the world.”

Start your system off with the basics then build it up. Think cleansing, hair management, and moisturization as your foundations. Then build in additional elements such as eye cream to target lines and puffiness, exfoliation to slough off the dead skin and brighten the complexion, mask treatments to soothe and hydrate tired skin, or for an extra anti-aging, moisture boost, pop on serum after cleansing.

He adds: “When you do this at least once a day, you instantly know when the fine skin under your eyes is fatigued and needs relief from an eye treatment, or when your skin requires intensive moisturizing after late nights or travel. Then once a week, give your skin a deeper cleanse: take five minutes to apply a deep cleansing clay mask.

“When you have a basic grooming routine in place, it becomes a ritual. Spending a few minutes at the mirror taking care of your skin, or lying in a bath with a mask on once a week. It makes you feel better. You are putting yourself together, which makes you feel refreshed and younger, much the same way as wearing a beautiful pair of shoes or a beautiful new suit. And it has a ripple effect. By making this effort, your presence has a positive impact on others.”

As you continue on your skincare journey, you might find a few extra tricks and tools handy. For covering up any blemishes, dark shadows or shaving marks, adding in concealer to your daily routine is a great way to give your skin an instant pick-me-up.

“Fine grooming also involves using a few simple tools to correct any flaws,” Mr. Ford adds. “Many men admit to stealing a dab of concealer or foundation from a woman in their life. I formulated a concealer especially for men’s skin to quickly camouflage blemishes, shaving nicks or razor burn, or even to brighten dark circles under the eyes,” he shares. “It can be this simple: take care of your skin, look closely at your face and use a few basic corrective techniques, and you will present your most handsome and impeccable self to the world.”
